An ensi is a rug woven to hang over the entrance of a tent, in effect a door in carpet form. It is usually divided into a cross-panel layout, often read as a stylized doorway or garden, quite different from the repeating gül field of a floor rug.
It sits among the household weavings of Turkmen life, alongside the chuval storage bag and the asmalyk camel trapping, each made for a specific place in the tent.
