The horizontal threads passed across after each row of knots and beaten down tight, locking the knots in place.
The weft is the horizontal thread passed across the loom after each row of knots and then beaten down hard with a heavy comb. It does not show on the surface; its job is to lock each row of knots against the one below and hold the warp threads in place.
The number of weft passes between rows, called shoots, affects how firm and flat the finished rug sits. Together the warp and weft are the hidden foundation beneath the pile.
