Madder

Madder is the plant whose root yields the warm, glowing reds at the heart of a Turkmen rug. Drawing a clear red from it rather than a muddy brown is real chemistry: dyers keep the bath well below a boil and favor hard, mineral-rich water, the same trick behind the famous Turkey Red.

The exact shade depends on the mordant and the water, so the same root can give a rust or a deep crimson. Because each batch is mixed and heated separately, no two come out identical, which is one source of abrash. With indigo blue and undyed ivory, madder red completes the classic palette.
