Nakış

Technique

The weaving cartoon: a full-size plan of a rug drawn square by square on squared paper, where each square is one knot. The part of the craft we sell as a digital pattern.

The nakış, also called the naqsheh, is the weaving cartoon: a full-size plan of a rug drawn square by square on squared paper, where each square stands for one knot. The whole design, medallion, border and every color change, exists on the grid before a single knot is tied.

Drawing one is its own discipline, separate from weaving. A flowing curve has to be stepped cleanly across the grid, and the corners and field have to balance at full knot count. The nakış is the part of the craft we sell as a digital pattern, so the design can be woven again and again.
